Bills rookie offensive lineman Eric Wood suffered an ugly injury in the third quarter of Buffalo's 18-15 loss to Jacksonville. The injury was so bad, in fact, that CBS opted not to show any replays of the play because it was too gruesome.
Wood was rolled up on during a Buffalo pass play, and his left leg bent at an extremely unnatural angle. According to the Bills, Wood fractured both his tibia and fibula, and stayed in Jacksonville to have immediate season-ending surgery. The injury was easily one of the worst in the NFL this season and could wind up keeping Wood out of the lineup for much longer than the final six weeks of 2009.
How crazy is that and right before the holiday. Wood, who was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, had been one of Buffalo's most consistent offensive linemen for an already-hobbled unit.
"No matter how much you work out, injuries are going to happen," fellow lineman Jonathan Scott said. "Unfortunately for us, we seem to get a lot of them at the same time. It's tough because the guys who went down are good guys, hard-working guys. We just have to persevere and try to get through this as best we can."
Wood's surgery replaced the fractured bones, and he is expected to return to Buffalo as soon as Monday. The Bills will almost certainly place Wood on injured reserve and fill his roster spot once Week 11 ends.
